The raw power of ocean can be intimidating, especially on the north coast of Kauai! It can also provide some incredible mood and drama!
This is a location we had scouted at a safe distance the day before. We studied how the waves were breaking and where the 'relative' safe zones were at the same point at the tidal cycle we were planning to shoot. What we noticed is that the power was being taken out of the waves as they crashed into the edge of the wave cut platform. By the time the wash got to the back of the platform (where this shot was taken) there was very little energy left.
Single exposure taken over half a second. The main challenges I faced capturing this were:
1. Trying to catch 'the moment'. After each shot the lens was usually dripping with spray, so it needed wiping almost constantly!
2. Keeping the tripod from moving during the shot as the wash circled around me.
2. Trying not to get washed out to sea!
