Jökulsarlón Glacial Lagoon
Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice. Here you can see the result of these two elemental forces in a totally natural way. In many places icebergs are pure white to almost translucent, not so in Iceland. These black stripes through the ice are layers of volcanic ash deposited on the surface of the glacier. Now as the glacier is disintegrating these layers are exposed once again. Just like tree rings record atmospheric conditions and coral reefs record aquatic conditions, through their lifespan these vast glaciers collect and store so much information about the history of our planet.
